What is Wagering requirement?
A wagering requirement is the amount a player must bet before bonus funds or winnings from them can be withdrawn, usually expressed as a multiple of the bonus.
A £20 bonus with a 10x requirement means £200 must be wagered before withdrawal. Each bet counts towards the total, weighted by game type. Some offers calculate the multiple on the bonus plus deposit, which makes the requirement much larger.
Because every bet carries a house edge, high requirements make it likely that bonus funds are lost before they can be withdrawn. Wagering £500 on slots with a 4% edge has an expected loss of £20. Requirements of 30x to 60x were once common in the UK market.
The UK Gambling Commission capped wagering requirements at 10x for offers to British customers from 19 January 2026, arguing that high multiples encouraged longer and more intense gambling. The terms also usually set a time limit for completing the wagering, after which unused bonus funds expire.
