French roulette with la partage returns half an even-money stake when zero comes up, which halves the edge on those bets to 1.35%.
Why the zero decides everything
Roulette pays as if there were 36 numbers. A single-zero wheel has 37 pockets and a double-zero wheel 38, and that extra pocket is the casino's margin. It is the same on almost every bet: covering more numbers raises your chance of winning a spin, but lowers the payout by exactly enough to keep the edge in place.
European, French and American wheels
European and French wheels have one zero; American wheels add a double zero. French tables often apply la partage or en prison on even-money bets, which halves the edge on those bets to 1.35%. The American top line bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 is the worst bet on the table at 7.89%. See how roulette compares with other games in our best odds ranking.
Frequently asked questions
What are the odds of hitting a single number in roulette?
On a European or French wheel with 37 pockets, a straight-up bet wins 1 time in 37, or 2.70% of spins. On an American wheel with 38 pockets it is 1 in 38, or 2.63%. Either way it pays 35 to 1, which is why the house keeps an edge.
Which roulette wheel has the best odds?
French roulette with the la partage rule, for even-money bets: the house edge drops to 1.35%. A standard European single-zero wheel has 2.70% on every bet, and the American double-zero wheel 5.26%, or 7.89% on the five-number top line bet.
Is there a roulette betting system that works?
No. Every bet on the same wheel has the same house edge (apart from the American top line and French la partage), and betting systems such as the Martingale only change how wins and losses are spread out. They cannot change the expected loss.
What is the house edge in roulette?
It comes from the zero pockets. Payouts are calculated as if the wheel had 36 numbers, but it has 37 or 38, so the casino keeps 1/37 (2.70%) of every bet on average on a single-zero wheel and 2/38 (5.26%) on a double-zero wheel.
