What is Outside bets?

Outside bets in roulette are wagers on large groups of numbers placed outside the main number grid, such as red or black, odd or even, high or low, dozens and columns.

Even-money outside bets cover 18 numbers and pay 1 to 1. Dozens and columns cover 12 numbers and pay 2 to 1. Because zero is excluded from all of them, a zero result makes outside bets lose unless la partage or en prison applies.

Inside bets, by contrast, are placed on the number grid itself: straight up, split, street, corner and six line. Inside bets pay more but win less often.

On a standard single-zero wheel, inside and outside bets carry the same house edge. The choice between them changes volatility, not the expected cost per pound staked. Outside bets are the most commonly played roulette wagers. Their smaller payouts and higher hit rate mean a session tends to fluctuate less than one built around single numbers. Many tables set higher minimum stakes for outside bets than for inside bets.
