What is Odds formats?
Odds formats are the ways betting prices are displayed: fractional (5/2), decimal (3.50) and American (+250) are the three main formats and express the same price.
Fractional odds, traditional in the UK, show profit relative to stake: 5/2 means £5 profit for every £2 staked. Decimal odds, standard in Europe and Australia, show the total return per unit including the stake: 3.50 returns £3.50 for each £1. American odds use a plus figure for the profit on a 100 stake, such as +250, and a minus figure for the stake needed to win 100, such as minus 150.
All three convert to the same implied probability. Decimal 3.50 implies a 1 in 3.5 chance, or about 28.6%.
Understanding formats helps readers interpret betting coverage and compare prices, which always include the bookmaker's margin. Many online sportsbooks let customers switch between formats in their account settings. Each format is simply a different way of writing the same price.
