What is Zero?
The zero is the green pocket on a roulette wheel that is neither red nor black, odd nor even; it is the source of the casino's edge in roulette.
When the ball lands on zero, all outside bets, such as red, black, odd, even, high, low, dozens and columns, lose unless a special rule applies. Bets placed directly on zero, or on combinations including it, are paid normally.
The European wheel has one zero and the American wheel has two, a 0 and a 00, which is why the American game costs players roughly twice as much. Rules such as la partage and en prison soften the impact of zero on even-money bets.
Some promotional and novelty games advertise 'no zero' roulette, which removes the edge entirely. These are rare and usually come with restrictions. The zero is coloured green on the wheel and the layout. On European wheels it sits between 26 and 32, and on American wheels the 0 and 00 sit directly opposite each other.
