What is Column bet?

A column bet in roulette is a wager on one of the three vertical columns of twelve numbers on the table layout, paying 2 to 1.

The first column contains 1, 4, 7 and so on up to 34, the second 2, 5, 8 up to 35, and the third 3, 6, 9 up to 36. The chip is placed in the box at the end of the chosen column.

Like the dozen bet, the column bet covers 12 of the 37 pockets on a European wheel and loses on zero. Its house edge is the same as most other roulette bets.

Column and dozen bets are often discussed together because they share the same payout and probability, differing only in which numbers they include. Because the columns mix red and black numbers and high and low numbers, a column bet does not overlap neatly with even-money bets. Like dozens, a column wins on average about once every three spins.
