What is Corner bet?

A corner bet in roulette is a wager on four numbers that meet at a corner on the layout, such as 1, 2, 4 and 5, paying 8 to 1.

The chip is placed at the intersection of the four numbers. On a European wheel the chance of winning is 4 in 37. In French it is called a carré.

Some tables offer a separate four-number bet on 0, 1, 2 and 3, called first four, which pays at the same rate. On American tables, the five-number bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 pays 6 to 1 and carries a higher edge.

As with other inside bets, the corner bet's edge is about 2.70% on a single-zero wheel. On a single-zero wheel a corner wins on average about once every 9.25 spins. Because every number except zero touches at least one corner, players sometimes use several corner bets to cover large parts of the layout. Covering more of the layout raises the chance of a win on any spin, but it does not change the expected loss per pound wagered.
