What is Split bet?
A split bet in roulette is a wager on two adjacent numbers on the table layout, placed on the line between them, paying 17 to 1 if either number wins.
For example, a chip on the line between 17 and 20 covers both numbers. On a European wheel the chance of winning is 2 in 37, and the 17 to 1 payout gives the standard house edge of about 2.70%.
Splits can be placed horizontally or vertically on the layout, and also between zero and an adjacent number such as 0 and 1. In French terminology the bet is called a cheval.
In blackjack, splitting means something else: turning a pair into two separate hands. Because each split covers two of the 37 pockets on a European wheel, a winning split occurs on average about once every 18.5 spins. Players can place several splits on the same spin, but each one is settled separately at the 17 to 1 rate. The bet is one of five standard inside bets alongside straight up, street, corner and six line.
