What is Hardways?
A hardways bet in craps is a wager that 4, 6, 8 or 10 will be rolled as a pair, such as two 3s for hard 6, before it is rolled another way or a 7 appears.
Hard 6 and hard 8 typically pay 9 to 1, with a house edge of about 9.09%. Hard 4 and hard 10 typically pay 7 to 1, with an edge of about 11.11%. Rolling the number 'easy', for example 5 and 1 for six, or any 7, makes the bet lose.
Hardways are proposition bets, placed in the centre of the table and handled by the stickman. They can be made or removed at any time and are usually working only after a point is set unless the player asks otherwise.
Their high payouts are offset by edges many times higher than on line bets. Hardways are popular because of their simple, story-like appeal and fast results, and they are a regular part of the craps table's atmosphere. Their edges, however, are among the highest of any standard craps wager.
