What is High roller?
A high roller is a customer who gambles with large stakes, generating revenue for an operator well above average and typically receiving special treatment in return.
High rollers can receive comps such as free hotel suites, flights and dining, access to private gaming rooms and higher table limits. Online, they may be assigned account managers and offered enhanced bonuses.
High-value customers have been a recurring concern for regulators. Several UK enforcement cases have involved VIP customers who were allowed to gamble large sums without adequate checks on the source of their money, leading to fines. The UK Gambling Commission tightened rules on VIP schemes in 2020.
In land-based markets such as Macau, the distinction between VIP and premium mass players shapes revenue reporting. Large wins or losses by individual high rollers can also make quarterly results more volatile, which is why analysts watch VIP volumes closely. Operators manage this risk by setting table limits and by vetting customers before extending credit or raising limits.
