What is European roulette?
European roulette is the version of roulette played on a wheel with 37 pockets, numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero, giving a house edge of about 2.70%.
The single green zero is the source of the house advantage. All bets pay as if there were 36 numbers, so a straight-up bet pays 35 to 1 when the true odds are 36 to 1. The edge is 1/37, or about 2.70%, on every standard bet.
French roulette uses the same wheel but often adds the la partage or en prison rule on even-money bets, halving the edge on those bets to about 1.35%. It also has French names for bets and a different table layout.
European roulette is the standard in UK and continental European casinos and most online casinos, while the double-zero American wheel is common in the United States. The game's single-zero layout is also the most common in live dealer studios, which stream roulette to players in many regulated markets.
