What is Stake limit?

A stake limit is a legal maximum on how much can be bet on a single game round, such as Great Britain's cap of £5 per spin on online slots for adults aged 25 and over.

Great Britain introduced online slot stake limits in 2025: £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over from 9 April, and £2 for those aged 18 to 24 from 21 May. The lower limit for young adults reflected government evidence that this age group was at higher risk. The limits apply to online slots only, not to other casino games.

Stake limits had earlier been applied to land-based machines, most notably the reduction of the maximum stake on fixed-odds betting terminals from £100 to £2 in April 2019.

Other countries use stake limits too, such as Germany's €1 per spin limit on online slots. Industry groups argued that the online slot limits would push some players to unlicensed sites, while campaigners said they should have been set lower.
