What is Scatter symbol?
A scatter symbol is a slot symbol that pays or triggers a feature wherever it lands on the reels, without needing to line up on a payline.
Most slot symbols only pay when they land in sequence on an active line. Scatters are the exception: three or more anywhere in view typically trigger a bonus round, most often free spins, or pay a multiple of the total stake directly.
The exact rules vary by game. Some slots need scatters on specific reels, some award extra free spins for additional scatters, and some allow scatters to land during the feature to retrigger it. The paytable sets out these rules.
Because the bonus round in many modern slots carries a large share of the game's RTP, how often scatters land has a big effect on how a game feels to play and on its volatility. Scatter rules are listed in the game's paytable, and they apply in the same way at every stake level.
