What is Push?
A push is a tied result in which the player's stake is returned without a win or loss, most commonly when the player and dealer have equal totals in blackjack.
If the player stands on 19 and the dealer also finishes on 19, the hand is a push and the stake is returned. A push also occurs in some table games and betting markets when a result lands exactly on the line.
In blackjack, pushes do not always apply. A player who busts loses even if the dealer then busts, which is the main source of the house edge. Some variants change push rules: in certain games the dealer wins all ties, which raises the edge sharply.
The term also appears in craps, where a 12 on the come-out roll is a push for don't pass bets, and in sports betting on whole-number handicaps. In reporting on table game results, pushes count as neither revenue nor payout because the stake simply changes hands back to the player.
