What is Progressive jackpot?
A progressive jackpot is a prize that grows as a small share of each qualifying stake is added to it, until it is won and resets to a starting value known as the seed.
A fraction of every bet, often around 1% to 2% depending on the game, feeds the jackpot pool. Local progressives are linked to a single machine or casino, while networked progressives pool stakes across many casinos or online sites, which lets prizes reach millions.
The contribution to the jackpot is part of the game's RTP. That means the base game usually pays less than a comparable non-progressive slot, and much of the theoretical return is concentrated in a prize that very few players will ever win. Some progressives require the maximum stake to qualify for the top prize.
Large jackpot wins attract headlines, but the odds of winning are typically very long, and the timing of a win is set by the random number generator rather than by the jackpot's size.
