What is Multiplier?
A multiplier is a game feature that increases a win by a fixed factor, such as 2x or 10x, applied to the base payout of a winning combination or round.
If a win of £5 is hit with a 3x multiplier, it pays £15. Multipliers can be attached to wild symbols, can grow with each cascade or free spin, or can appear as random values dropped onto the reels. In some games, several multipliers on the same win are added together, in others they are multiplied, which produces very different results.
Multipliers also appear outside slots. Game shows in live casino studios use random multipliers on bets, and crash games are built around a multiplier that rises until the round ends.
Because multipliers are built into the maths model, they shift value towards rarer, larger wins rather than increasing the overall return, which tends to raise a game's volatility. The paytable explains exactly how each multiplier is applied in a given game.
