What is Licence?
A licence is the official authorisation a regulator grants a company to offer gambling or supply gambling products in a jurisdiction, subject to conditions it must meet.
Applicants are typically assessed on the integrity of owners and management, financial stability, technical systems, anti-money laundering controls and plans to protect players. Licences come with conditions, such as segregating or protecting customer funds, verifying age and identity, offering safer gambling tools and following advertising rules.
Regulators can fine licensees, add conditions, suspend or revoke a licence for breaches. Many markets issue separate licences for operators, suppliers and key individuals, and some limit the number of licences available.
Licensing status is a basic fact in gambling reporting: it shows which regulator is responsible and what protections a player can expect. In British English, licence is the noun and license the verb. Licences are usually issued for a set term and must be renewed.
