What is Comp points?

Comp points are loyalty points that casinos award for gambling activity, usually tracked through a player card, and exchangeable for rewards, free play or status tiers.

Players insert a loyalty card into a slot machine or present it at a table, and the casino records their play. Points accrue in proportion to amounts wagered, for example one point per set amount of coin-in. Online casinos run similar point schemes.

Points can be redeemed for dining, hotel stays, merchandise or free play, and often determine tier status, which unlocks further benefits.

Player tracking data from loyalty schemes is also used for marketing and, increasingly, for identifying signs of gambling harm. Point schemes differ in how generous they are: a player's earning rate may depend on the game, with table games and slots earning at different rates. Points can expire if an account is inactive, and schemes can be changed by the operator. In some jurisdictions, regulators have restricted rewards that encourage longer or more intense play.
