What is Accumulator?
An accumulator, called a parlay in the US, is a single bet combining several selections, all of which must win; the odds of each selection are multiplied together.
Four selections each at decimal odds of 2.00 combine to odds of 16.00, so a £5 stake would return £80 if all four win. If any selection loses, the whole bet loses. A bet builder or same-game parlay combines several outcomes from one match, with odds adjusted for correlation.
Accumulators carry higher margins than single bets because the bookmaker's margin on each leg compounds. A margin of 5% per leg grows to much more across five or six legs.
That compounding explains why accumulators feature heavily in operator marketing and why sportsbook hold has tended to rise as parlays have grown in popularity, particularly in the US. Some operators offer acca insurance, refunding a stake as a bonus if only one leg fails, which is a promotional cost.
