What is Pit boss?
A pit boss is a casino supervisor who oversees a group of gaming tables, known as the pit, ensuring games run correctly and resolving disputes.
Pit bosses monitor dealers and players, approve large payouts and fills of chips, track high-value players for comps, and watch for cheating or advantage play such as card counting. They work closely with surveillance and the cage.
In larger casinos there is a hierarchy, with floor supervisors watching a few tables each and a pit manager responsible for the whole area.
The role also involves customer relations, particularly with regular and high-staking players. Pit bosses also complete reports on table performance, including the drop, the fills of chips from the cage and the credits returned to it, which are used to calculate table hold. They are often the first point of contact when a player disputes a payout or when a dealer makes an error. In many jurisdictions, they must hold a personal licence. The role has also become associated with responsible gambling duties, such as spotting customers who show signs of distress or who may be self-excluded.
