What is Paylines?
Paylines are the fixed patterns across a slot's reels on which matching symbols must land to produce a win; ways-to-win games replace them with any adjacent-reel match.
Classic slots have a single horizontal line. Modern video slots often use 10, 20 or more paylines that zigzag across the grid. Symbols usually need to start on the leftmost reel and run consecutively along a line to pay. On some games players can choose how many lines to play, while most newer titles fix all lines as active.
Ways-to-win games drop fixed lines. In a 243-ways slot, which has five reels of three rows, any matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right count, giving 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 combinations. Mechanics such as Megaways extend this idea with reel heights that change on each spin.
More lines or ways do not in themselves make a game more generous. The return is still set by the overall maths model and the RTP.
