What is iGaming?

iGaming is the industry term for gambling conducted over the internet, covering online casino, slots, poker, bingo and often online sports betting.

Usage varies. In the US, iGaming usually means online casino and poker only, as distinct from online sports betting. In Europe, the term is often used for all online gambling.

Legal status differs widely by country and, in the US, by state. Some jurisdictions license online casino, others allow only sports betting or lotteries, and some ban online gambling entirely while still struggling to block unlicensed sites.

The term appears in trade titles, conference names and company descriptions throughout the sector. The sector relies on a supply chain of B2B companies, including game providers, platforms and payment and identity services. Revenue growth in newly regulated markets, such as US states that legalise online casino, is closely watched by investors and features heavily in industry news. Public debate often focuses on the balance between tax income, consumer choice and gambling harm.
