What is Texas hold'em?

Texas hold'em is the most widely played form of poker, in which each player gets two private cards and shares five community cards to make the best five-card hand.

A hand begins with two forced bets called blinds. Each player receives two hole cards, followed by a betting round. Three community cards, the flop, are then dealt, followed by a fourth, the turn, and a fifth, the river, with betting after each. The best five-card hand from any combination of hole and community cards wins, unless all but one player folds earlier.

Hold'em is usually played as no-limit, where players can bet all their chips at any time, or fixed limit. It is the main game in televised tournaments and online poker.

Unlike house-banked casino games, poker players compete against each other. The operator earns money through the rake or tournament fees rather than from player losses. Its popularity grew rapidly in the 2000s with televised tournaments and online poker.
