What is Remote Gaming Duty?
Remote Gaming Duty (RGD) is the UK tax on profits from online casino, slots and similar games, charged on gross gaming yield; it rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026.
RGD applies to operators serving UK customers, regardless of where the operator is based, on a point-of-consumption basis introduced in 2014. It is calculated on the money staked by UK players minus their winnings.
The government announced the increase in the November 2025 Budget. It also said Remote Betting Duty on online sports betting would rise from 15% to 25% from April 2027. The government expected operators to pass much of the increase on to customers through lower payouts or reduced spending on offers.
Tax rates on GGR are a major factor in operators' decisions about which markets to serve and in debates about the size of unlicensed markets. The 40% rate is among the highest online casino tax rates in Europe.
